Writing Sample: Fiction

“Have I died?”Thunder clapped in rhythm with the raging sea, while the winds howled their harrowing song. Night had spread its thick blanket, split every so often by flashes of cracked white. What little light filtered through during those brief moments illuminated the figure that loomed over him; human, save for eyes that pierced like the lightning overhead, and wings — Large, black wings.“No.” They answered.“That’s a shame.”He wondered if there was ever a sight more pitiful than himself; propped against the sinking ship’s mast, a young man as broken as the vessel he was on. Perhaps even more so. Both seemed to have surrendered against the tumultuous Caribbean Sea, swaying at the centre of its mercy.Exhaustion overpowered all else- he could barely feel his sore limbs, or the cold and heaviness of his body. His throat was raw from hours spent screaming and cursing at nothing, until he could scream no more. But there was no need to express when everything around him already echoed his heart’s anguish.A day, a week — he had lost track of how long he had been out at sea. There were fragments playing through his mind, of him running towards the ship, and him not wanting to go alone. A pocketwatch rested in his palm, ticking away; all he had left of his family. He never meant to go alone.“Do you need a ship?”The voice brought him back to the present. Gentle, yet sharp enough to cut through the storm and agonized creaking of the floorboards, and forced him to realise that what stood in front of him was more than what could be conjured by his tired, lonely mind. Weary as he may have been, he found himself struggling to stand.Now, he saw clearly. Saw her clearly. Dark hair billowing in the wind, a stark contrast to pale, luminescent skin. There was a fairness to her features, but they were set into an eerily-still expression — unearthly, unlike anything he had ever come across. The longer he looked, the less human she appeared.He began to recall stories once heard of encounters with such creatures, how there had been plenty in his father’s line of work; Immortals. They were sought after by each of the colonial empires, all looking to enlist Immortals into their respective armies. Staring at the one before him, he could understand why.She repeated her question, though it was a while before he could bring himself to respond. Just moments prior, he had been prepared to meet his end. Even if he chose to continue, there was nothing left to live for. Nothing, he told himself — yet, the soft ticking in his hands somehow had him nodding an answer. Tension eased her posture, and the woman turn away.Following her gaze, he could just about discern the outline of a ship in the distance. Another crack of light in the night sky allowed for him to see the vessel. Odd — were the sails blue? The Immortal turned back to him before he could determine.“I need a captain.”
